The area code 971 services part of Oregon state, and is one of the more frustrating of the new codes added throughout the United State. This is because this code is an overlay rather than a split. That means that instead of having its own area of coverage, this area code is used in the same area as another. That can cause a lot of blurring when first implemented, and that blurring can leave many feeling frustrated. It also makes pinpointing the origin of an unknown phone call a bit trickier.
At one time, the area code 503 was the only area code that was needed in the state of Oregon. That meant it covered the whole state and there were abundance of phone numbers to go around. When cell phones became more popular, people found the need to have more than one phone number. That put a strain on the system, and a new code was added to the state. That code was 541, and it split from the 503 code. After that, it became clear that an further code was needed, and that was the area code 971.
Area Codes Locator
When the area code 971 was introduced, those in the 503 area code had a new set of numbers to dial. That meant some had a dissimilar area code for their movable amount and their landlines. This overlay was all of the 503 code, with the irregularity of Tillamook and Clatsop counties. They remained exclusively with the 503 code. This should be changing in April of 2008. That means the whole area of 503 will be overlaid by the area code 971.
Though there is some blurring when you have overlaying area codes, you can be sure any phone amount with the area code 971 is advent from the northwestern part of the state of Oregon. That includes the cities of Portland, Salem, and Astoria. This is a small area, but has the highest people in the state. The 971 code is not used as much as thought, but some unknown calls advent into your home may have this code.
When dealing with such an area code 971 number, you have a few choices. You can start with a white or yellow page reverse phone lookup. If you are getting calls from a landline number, you may find what you need there. However, if your unknown amount is cellular, you may have to find a reverse cell lookup that will quest the area code 971 in more detail for you.
