The English author Helen Beatrix Potter was born in July 1866 and lived until the ripe age of 77. Today she is remembered for artistic and literary skills and she is also credited for preserving a lot of the land which now comprises the Lake District National Park. Throughout her career she bought lots of property and farms in Near Sawrey most of which she left to the National trust when she died in 1943.
Beatrix is most known for her children's books which today are considered classics. The tale of Peter Rabbit became so beloved even today you can find his image on all from toys to tea towels. The book was first published well over a hundred years ago and today it is still being loved by children and sets to continue for many generations to come.

She had a passion for animals and nature and from a young age she displayed artistic and literary skills. She kept a journal which was written in secret code from the age of 14. Another interest was science, especially the study of fungi. Her home in London was very close to the British Museum of Natural History so she would spend a lot of her spare time studying about varied fungi and drawing them. This led her to expound a book on fungi with correct drawings of her observations. Nothing came of this fascination but she carried on her sketching.
Her love of animals stems from her childhood. Her brother Bertram and Beatrix had many small animals as pets which they observed closely and drew endlessly. It is plan that other than her brother her only friends were her animals. She had a serious interest and love for all creatures and the outdoors. She would be in her element in the summer exploring the Lake District and areas in Scotland which were the destinations of most summer holidays. This area proved to be an inspiration for many of her books after she bought a farm in the area which she named "Hill Top". At this time she still lived at home with her parents but she would spend as often as she could at the farm and it was these years that she wrote many classic works including The Story of Miss Moppet, The Tale of Tom Kitten and The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies to name just a few.
Beatrix more of less gave up writing when she met and married a lawyer William Heelis in 1913. She moved to her Hill Top farm with her new husband where they lived for many years. She became a farmer's wife and only published a few more books while her happy marriage. She started to lose her eyesight in 1918 which sadly saw her output of illustrations and books diminish. She was never curious in fame and gave up writing thoroughly in 1930.
She come to be quite an finished sheep breeder and was elected president of the Herdwick Sheep-Breeders' connection shortly before she died. She was also active with the National Trust and worked hard to retain open land for future generations, this was sealed when she died and left much of her property to the Trust. Today her books still captivate children colse to the world and this trend sets to continue.
